Cave Run Lake is a beautiful place to visit!
It is a great place for family vacations, reunions, camping retreats, golfing, horse back riding,
fishing, hunting, and boating.
While visiting the Cave Run Lake area, you
will want to visit some of arts, crafts,
gifts, and antique stores. Be sure to visit our Lodging & Camping section for cabin
rentals and bed & breakfast availability, when booking your lodging plans. Many
rentals are located within walking distance to Cave Run Lake. There are many rental cabins
that will put you in the heart of all Cave Run has to to offer. Start your day off with a
picnic or a quick swim in the lake. If you prefer camping, Cave Run Lake has several
campgrounds available to accommodate visitors. RV's are welcome! Boating is very popular
throughout the area (boat rental is available at the local marinas) as well as fishing and
hunting. If you like Muskie, you'll love fishing Cave Run! Horse back riding and hiking is
also available for those wishing to explore the wildlife of Cave Run. ATV riding and hiking is also
available for those wishing to explore the wildlife of the Cave Run Lake area. Be sure to

Once you visit Cave Run Lake and experience
all that the Daniel Boone National Forest has to offer, you will probably become a return
visitor. Many vacationers come here from many parts of Ohio including: Cincinnati, Dayton,
Columbus, and Cleveland. The area also is traveled by its fellow Kentuckians from just
about everywhere in the state. KY is a beautiful state to visit... experience it once and
you'll come back!
Rowan County, Kentucky was founded in 1856 and
named after John Rowan whom had represented Kentucky in the United States House of
Representatives between the years of 1807 and 1809, and also represented Kentucky as a
member of the Unites States Senate from 1825 to 1831.
Farmer's was the first community to develop in
Rowan County, yet the town of Morehead was founded in 1856 as with Rowan County.
Morehead was named after an attorney, later to
become governor, James
Turner Morehead, which served as governor from 1834 to1836. Mr. Morehead was the first
native Kentuckian to be elected as governor. He had also was appointed to the United
States Senate in 1841 and served through 1847.
Mr. Morehead passed away on December 28, 1854
at the age of 57, with two great accomplishments within his term as governor, first he
established the Kentucky Association for Professional Teachers, and secondly encouraged
the formation of the Kentucky Common School Society
Morehead is the county seat and borders of the
Daniel Boone National Forest.
Morehead is home of Morehead State University known as
the " University of the Mountains" due to the breathtaking rolling hills
surrounding the area.
For the outdoor enthusiast camping, hiking,
biking, swimming, and boating (to name a few) can be done all within 10 miles of Morehead
at Cave Run Lake. Cave Run Lake having 166 miles of shoreline and known for the
"Muskie Capitol of the South" and being in the midst of the Daniel Boone
National Forest holds many activities to enjoy in the great outdoors!
